Choosing the right roof window depends on a few key things - your roof pitch, how easy the window will be to reach once installed, and what you need it to do. Whether you're adding light to a utility area or opening up a loft conversion, there's a VELUX roof window to suit most homes and roof types.
What Type of Roof Window Is Right for Your Loft?
The right roof window depends on your roof pitch, how you plan to use the space, and how easy it will be to reach once installed.
Centre Pivot Roof Windows
The most versatile option, suitable for any sloping roof with a pitch between 15° and 90°. Operated by a single handle at the top of the window, an initial short pull downward opens the ventilation flap, a further gentle pull opens the window fully. Available in white painted, white polyurethane, and pine finishes.l aluminium ladders are supplied with an operating pole for ease of use.
Top Hung Roof Windows
Commonly used in lower pitch roofs, these open outward to 45° and are excellent for creating wide, unobstructed views. The larger frame sizes are also suitable for fire escape purposes.
Remote-Operated Roof Windows
Ideal for high ceilings or awkward-to-reach positions. Powered by electricity or solar energy, they're operated by a portable control pad with pre-defined ventilation settings for easy control of light and airflow.
Conservation Roof Windows
Designed for traditional buildings where planning requires a window of traditional external appearance. Available with a black external profile and lower fixing position for a more streamlined finish.
Sun Tunnels
Where a roof window can't be installed, sun tunnels bring natural light into spaces where neither traditional nor roof windows can reach. Internal rooms such as bathrooms are where they make the most difference. Available in various diameters and suitable for both flat and pitched roofs.
VELUX Cabrio Balcony
The upper section rotates outward by 180° for extra headroom, while the lower half unfolds into a triple-glazed balcony with side railings. Easy to operate, it's the most efficient way to add natural light, ventilation, and a feeling of openness to your loft space.
Can Roof Windows Be Combined?
Combinations of vertical or fixed roof windows can be installed together to create bright, airy living spaces, particularly effective in loft spaces where maximising light across the whole area is the goal.
Does My Roof Need a Specific Pitch?
Roof windows can generally be installed into any sloping roof, though the right type depends on the degree of your pitch. We'll confirm which options are suitable for your specific roof before any work is carried out.
VELUX Servicing and Repairs
If you already have VELUX windows installed, we offer a full servicing package at £85 + VAT, covering a thorough inspection of all mechanisms, lubrication of fittings and hinges, and replacement of seals and ventilation filters. VELUX windows come with a 10-year warranty, and our servicing ensures they perform well beyond that.
We also carry out repairs for existing VELUX windows, whether that's damaged glazing, mechanical faults, or electrical issues. In many cases a repair is quicker and more cost-effective than a full replacement.
