A loft can be a dark, stuffy place if it’s not properly equipped, but putting in one or two roof windows provides a simple, effective and cheap solution. You can install electric lighting, of course, but that has its disadvantages and doesn’t solve the problem of air quality. So what are the benefits of roof windows?

Quality of Light
You might think all light’s alike, but direct sunlight has many advantages over artificial lighting. Besides illuminating a space far more efficiently than any artificial light, it can also have a positive effect on your mood.

The depression and many physiological problems experienced over the winter by sufferers of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) are the result of not being exposed to sufficient sunlight, but most of us are affected to a lesser extent. A roof window is far more efficient than a wall window at flooding the space in healthy light.

Balance of Thermal Energy
Windows not only let in light and heat, but also allow heat to escape. This can be a problem if the heat loss (U value) is higher than the solar gain (g value). More energy is required to keep the interior at a constant temperature, leading to higher bills and a higher carbon footprint.

Fortunately, Velux roof windows and some other brands have double or triple glazing that’s engineered to maintain an energy balance. You’ll get the maximum benefits of sunlight with a minimum cost to either your bank balance or the environment.

Ventilation
Remember, the problem with loft spaces isn’t just the light, but also the air quality. Unless you’re only planning on accessing your loft a couple of times a year, you need to improve ventilation. This isn’t just for a more pleasant experience, but also to avoid the many health hazards that can breed in stagnant air.
Installing one or two roof windows that can be opened will allow the air to circulate, making your loft a healthier and more attractive place.

Sunlight Is Free
Any form of artificial lighting involves an ongoing cost to run. If you choose roof windows, you’ll have the initial cost of installation — and that’s all. Sunlight is free, and you’ll be able to light your loft in the daytime at no cost.

Even the initial outlay needn’t be as much as you might think. Velux roof windows or similar brands are quick and easy for professionals to install, so you won’t have to pay for a major job.
