The Different Types of Loft Conversions

There are a number of different types of loft conversion that you can have built on your house.
The three most popular loft conversions are known as a Velux, Rear Dormer and Hip to Gable. The type of loft conversion you can have is dependant on what is suitable for your property. This varies from square footage to the potential usage of your conversion, as well as the planning permission that is likely to be granted.
The staircase up to the loft space is also very important when considering a full loft conversion. For more information about having a new staircase installed within your home, please visit our dedicated Staircase page.

A VELUX loft conversion is the singular most popular type of conversion. As no modification to the roof is required, this is the most affordable conversion possibility. Often the first choice when home owners are looking to make the most of a current space, no planning permission is required and is a fantastic choice for bringing natural light into an extra habitable area.
VELUX Roof Windows are the key ingredient with this form of conversion, which are available in a range of different size and styles. Please note that The Loft Access Company are members of the official VELUX Certified Installer Partnership.

This is the most traditional type of loft conversion. Unless a Dormer conversion is intended for the front of the property, it is unlikely that you will need to obtain planning permission.
A Dormer loft conversion includes a vertical wall from the bottom of your sloping roof. A flat roof is then built to meet the vertical wall; this allows us to give maximum headroom in the new loft extension.

Hip to Gable conversions create the maximise the amount of space in the loft, and are suitable for a variety of different uses including a bedroom en-suite, an office or a living/social room. Properties that are detached, semidetached or a bungalows are suitable, but are particularly effective within the existing space of properties with hipped roofs. The sloping side of a roof is changed to a flat gable end to increase the overall space within the conversion.
When considering this type of conversion, please take into consideration that planning permission may be required.
L Shaped dormers are becoming increasingly popular, particularly within the London boroughs where space is more restricted. Victorian properties are most suited to this style ocnversion, due to the shape of the home.
With an L Shaped conversion, additional space is created with a vertical wall from the bottom of the cloping roofs, with a flat roof built to meet the new wall.
This is a very common method of loft conversion, particularly in more built up urban areas where terraced houses are more commonplace.
Mansard conversions will most likely need planning permission from your local planning office, and windows within this type of conversion will be housed within dormers. For a mansard loft conversion, the dual-party or gable walls (depending on whether you live in a terraced or detached property) require to be raised to make a somewhat vertical – at least to 72° – profile for the mansard. A horizontal cross section and timber framing is then added.
